Why We Live synopsis (in Japanese: not yet translated on TMDB)
不遇を嘆き、寺や坊主を嫌っていた青年・了顕は、もうすぐ生まれてくる子供に希望を託していた。不幸な事故が、そんな了顕から全てを奪い去ってしまう。自暴自棄の日々、暗闇にもがき苦しんでいた了顕が出会うのは、蓮如上人の法話であった。そこには、親鸞聖人が明らかにした“なぜ生きる”の答えが示されていた。次第に引き込まれ、心の迷いが晴れた了顕は、蓮如上人の弟子となる。参詣者が増える一方の本願寺は、他宗派からの恨みを買い、蓮如上人と了顕たちは京都を追われ、新たな布教の地を求め、北陸の吉崎（福井）にたどり着いた……。
